Eighth-grader raises money for Sandy Hook Elementary

Dorene Sanchez and her dad watched news coverage on TV in horror. Although the tragedy took place 1,100 miles from her home, the eighth-grade D.C. Everest Junior High School student knew she had to do something to ease the pain felt by the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

That's when she came up with the idea of making bookmarks to raise money to send to the elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

"This was such a tragic thing, I thought maybe if I could do something, even something little, I could make a difference in their lives," Dorene said about the project. ...
