The proposed expansion of the school voucher program is bad public policy that could ultimately harm those who it is intended to support. The proposed expansion of the availability of school vouchers will greatly increase the cost and size of a government program. It will be turning a limited program that was originally intended to help poor, minority kids in Milwaukee into a new "entitlement" program with recipients expecting a government handout year after year. Wisconsin taxpayers are not obligated to financially support private and/or religious schools. The proposed expansion of the voucher program will siphon away money from public schools that state government has a constitutional mandate to support.
Ultimately, the proposed expansion of vouchers could hurt private education. There is an old saying at the State Capitol that the "Golden Rule" means that he or she who has the gold makes the rules. Do we really want future politicians or Madison bureaucrats dictating what private schools can teach? Do we really want Catholic schools, for example, being told that they can accept voucher students but they must teach that abortions are a good method of family planning?
