In a span of two days last week, Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson watched his team lose a two-time Pro Bowl receiver and miss out on signing a three-time Pro Bowl running back.

Those are the kinds of players available in free agency - Greg Jennings, who for most of his seven seasons with the Packers was their best receiver; and Steven Jackson, the St. Louis Rams' career rushing leader.

Yet Thompson, as he often does, drew a financial line in the sand and let Jennings sign with the rival Minnesota Vikings and allowed the Atlanta Falcons to nab Jackson. ...
