Letters: Column writer critical of UW Oshkosh invited to tour campus

I'm writing to extend a personal invitation to Dr. James Benson, author of a recent column about the university where he once worked.

I would enjoy the opportunity to welcome him to the campus that I know and love.

UW Oshkosh today is a place where a community of faculty and staff work together to nurture student success, and where students consistently rise above the challenges placed before them.

I'd like to show him a faculty engaged in scholarship, writing books, winning NSF grants, and engaging students in the classroom and beyond the walls of the university.

I'd introduce him to the football team, the Model UN team, the student volunteers at the Community Pantry, the Jazz Ensemble, and the 80 students who will serve as peer mentors next fall.

I'd welcome him to my class to witness just how exceptional my students are. I'd explain the new general education program - the University Studies Program - we're launching next year that has already received national attention.

I'd show him the biodigester and point to our ranking as one of the "greenest" campuses in the country.

I'd take him to the Center for Academic Resources and the Writing Center to watch students working to hone their skills.

We'd walk through Dempsey Hall and the Student Success Center and he'd find scores of people dedicated to making sure we admit great students and taking care of them once they're here.

I'd show off our new facilities.

I'd show him countless new collaborations between faculty, staff and students.

If Dr. Benson takes me up on this, I would enjoy the conversation we could have.

As a retired UW Oshkosh professor, he might even be inspired by the UW Oshkosh students, staff, and faculty of 2013. I look forward to hearing from him.
