County board to consider unclaimed bodies ordinance

The Winnebago County Board will consider an ordinance Tuesday that would create a policy that would dictate how the county handles the disposition of unclaimed bodies.

Coroner Barry Busby said there currently is no policy in place for how to handle the one or two unclaimed bodies he deals with each year. Busby said he attempts to get written authorization from a family member giving him permission to cremate the body, but in cases where no authorization is obtained, Busby said the body must be buried.
