Zombo's future with Packers in question

Frank Zombo's injury issues leave his future with the Green Bay Packers in question.

The outside linebacker was a restricted free agent going into the offseason, but the Packers gave up their right of first refusal by declining to tender him an offer. More than a week into free agency, they haven't yet offered him a contract at the NFL minimum, as they did with fellow restricted free agents Robert Francois and Tom Crabtree.

The Packers have been in contact with his agent, and Zombo still is hoping the team will try to sign him, especially after outside linebacker Erik Walden left the Packers for the Indianapolis Colts in free agency. But he might not be in the Packers' plans for next season, depending on developments in free agency and the draft.

"I have been injury prone," Zombo said today. "But when I've been healthy I've produced."

He later added: "I'd love to be a Packer."

Zombo said several teams have called his agent, but he has not scheduled a visit to any teams.

Zombo, 26, has missed 23 of 48 games because of injuries in his three seasons with the Packers. Last year he had his worst injury, a severely pulled hamstring sustained in offseason workouts that sidelined him for all offseason practices, training camp and the first nine games.

He returned for the final seven games plus playoffs. He said he's at full speed and strength.

Zombo had four sacks in 13 games as a rookie in 2010, when he split playing time with Walden for most of the season at one starting outside linebacker spot. Zombo also had a sack in the Super Bowl that season.
