Green Bay is one of 10 locations selected nationwide to receive a grant to teach elementary-aged children how to swim.

The Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay was given $10,000 for a week of swim lessons by the ZAC Foundation, a group that teaches children about water safety.

About 100 children from Danz, Eisenhower and Sullivan elementary schools will attend ZAC Camp, which incorporates classroom curriculum and in-pool swim lessons to teach water safety, March 25-28.

Participants will be taught swimming strokes, emergency preparedness and response, and lifesaving techniques.

Mary Sue Lavin, senior director of school-based operations at the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay, said the classes are free for the children.

"The students we serve in these after-school programs come from low-income families, they might not be able to afford swim lessons," Lanvin said. "Knowing how to swim is an important skill and they should have the opportunity to learn. They'll be with many of their peers from school, which will make it fun."

The East Side YMCA is also a partner, providing its pool for the classes.
