Visitors to Green Bay public schools will be locked out of buildings starting today in an effort to increase security.

The Green Bay School Board on Monday directed schools to secure exterior doors immediately and to require visitors to use an intercom system to be allowed in. Almost all schools have cameras and an intercom system at main entrances to buildings.

Previously, entrances at most schools were unlocked to allow visitors into a vestibule. Doors from vestibules into the main school building were locked, and people were funneled through school offices to register and be allowed into the building.

That was accepted protocol several years ago and is a system used by other school districts.

However, some Green Bay School Board members raised concerns that interior office doors aren't locked, allowing people to travel from the outside through the office into the school without meeting a locked door.

The district eventually could add locks to interior doors leading into offices, which would allow visitors to step out of the weather and into a vestibule, but still give school staff an opportunity to lock out possible intruders.
