Funding woes to close Shiocton charter school

The Shiocton school board voted Monday to end a charter agreement with the Shiocton International Leadership Academy at the end of the school year.

The school ended up on the chopping block because it was unable to bring in enough revenue to cover costs and uncertainty about education funding in the next state budget, said Chris VanderHeyden, superintendent for Shiocton schools. The school's grant from the state Department of Public Instruction cannot be used to staff the school, and the district was spending more than $200,000 to pay for additional teachers.
