Letter: Rohrer has politically neutral good judgment

5:49 PM, Mar. 18, 2013  |  Comments

As chairman of the Republican Party of Manitowoc County, I invited Steve Olson and Mark Rohrer, both running for judge of the Manitowoc County Circuit Court, to our January meeting. I had heard that Olson had signed the Walker recall petition and so I asked him about it.

He confirmed that he had signed the petition because he believed that Gov. Walker "?had moved too quickly?" immediately after he became governor and should have moved more slowly. Rohrer was asked whether he had signed the petition and he replied that he had not. He explained that while he disagreed with the governor on a number of issues, he did not believe that Walker had done anything to warrant recall.

I thought about their respective responses. On one hand Olson thought Walker should have been recalled because he had "moved too quickly" (whatever that means). Olson cited no other reason such as malfeasance, criminal or ethical misbehavior. So, because Walker moved with dispatch and alacrity, Olson believes that he deserved recall, and that the 2010 gubernatorial election had to be nullified, and that the state of Wisconsin had to incur the monumental costs of a repeat gubernatorial election. That line of reasoning seems very illogical to me.

On the other hand, Rohrer apparently believed that because Gov. Walker had committed no legal, moral or ethical transgression, he did not deserve recall. Rohrer's decision, I believe, was based upon his well-considered and logical assumption that the recall of a sitting governor should not be motivated by emotion or political antagonisms.

I believe that Mark Rohrer will bring that kind of reasoned, mature, dispassionate, politically neutral judgment to the judiciary. Therefore, he deserves our support and our votes and gets my enthusiastic endorsement for the Manitowoc County Circuit Court.
