A public hearing to discuss plans for a $28 million highway reconstruction on Wausau's northwest side turned hostile amid concerns from local residents and business owners who fear the project will decimate businesses and drive down property values.

About 100 people attended the meeting Monday at Rasmussen College in Wausau, where Wisconsin Department of Transportation project managers talked about the reconstruction of Highway 51, which is set to begin April 1.
