Our View: Students race to organize 'Amazing Race'

The fun of the television show "The Amazing Race" is that competitors travel a huge amount of ground, completing challenging tasks and dealing with changing circumstances - all while the clock is ticking.

Wausau's Amazing Race, a project of the Wausau East High School Marketing II class, will capture some of the same rush and excitement for participating teams. And as the class works to complete the yearlong project, they're feeling the pressure themselves.

Participants in the race will run or walk from business to business, where they will complete a variety of challenges - physical and intellectual - on the way to the finish line. It sounds like a lot of fun, and we hope the Marketing II class gets lots of participation. They're hoping for at least 40 teams. Winning teams will get $400, $200 and $100, respectively, and proceeds raised will be split among the Marketing II students for scholarships.

The whole thing sounds like a fun event, and a cool and ambitious project by the students. They've worked with businesses for sponsorships, and to organize the events and challenges. Their teacher, Trevor Knight, said the project is intended to give students real-world experience. It's a different way of teaching, and the real stakes give the students valuable experience.

The team is focused now on trying to get people to sign up for the race - registration ends Monday.

Want to try your own hand in Wausau's Amazing Race? The event will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. April 6. Register your team of two to four participants for $50 per team by calling Wausau East High School at 715-261-0650 or emailing WausauAmazingRace@gmail.com. You also can find the event on Facebook or on Twitter as @WausauAmzinRace.
