Series: This is only the second meeting between UWGB and Bradley, and the first since the Phoenix fell 66-60 on the road on Jan. 24, 1973.
UWGB update: The Phoenix is making its first postseason appearance since advancing to the second round of the College Basketball Invitational in 2010 and ninth overall. ... UWGB is coming off a 70-69 loss to Valparaiso on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from senior Ryan Broekhoff in the Horizon League tournament semifinals. ... UWGB went 0-2 against Missouri Valley Conference teams this year, suffering a 72-70 loss to Southern Illinois on Dec. 15 and a 71-54 defeat at Drake on Feb. 23. .... Forward Brennan Cougill is the lone senior on this year's team, but there are some questions surrounding the future of junior Alec Brown, whose potential as an early entry NBA draft pick has been discussed. The 7-foot-1 center got off to a slow start this season, but is averaging 16.6 points per game over his last 14 contests. He's five points shy of 1,200 for his career. ... Wardle said he plans to have those discussions with Brown after the season, but sophomore guard Keifer Sykes believes he'll be back for his senior year. "He's a humble guy, so he really doesn't speak much on it," said Sykes. "If you ask him, I'm pretty sure he'll say he'll be here next year trying to get that NCAA bid." ... If the Phoenix wins, Wardle said there is a chance UWGB could host a game after the 16-team field is seeded after the opening round.
Bradley update: Bradley had three common opponents with UWGB this season, and went 1-2 against Drake, 2-0 against Southern Illinois and a 63-62 win over Illinois-Chicago. After splitting the regular-season series, Drake beat Bradley 81-66 in the openign round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. ... Today's game will be the first postseason game played on Bradley's campus since the Braves downed Tulane 77-61 in the quarterfinals of the 1982 NIT at Robertson Memorial. ... It's the program's first postseason appearance since reaching the championship game of the inaugural CIT in 2009. ... Center Will Egolf is a sixth-year senior who has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee twice during his career. The injury caused him to miss large portions of his sophomore and redshirt senior seasons. ... Junior guard Walt Lemon Jr. was a second-team all-conference pick after leading the team with 15.4 points per game. Guard Dyricus Simms-Edwards set a single-season school record with 84 steals, which tied for seventh nationally. ... "We have our hands full," Wardle said. "They're going to play physical and half-court defense. They're similar to some of the teams in our league like UIC. They run a lot of sets, like a new play every trip down, so we're not going to know all that, so we're going to have to talk and stick to our principles, and hopefully do a good job of doing what we did throughout the year defensively."
