A deeply divided Merrill School Board on Monday reinstated a teacher it fired earlier this year for his marijuana use and his connection with a criminal drug case.

The School Board voted 5-4 to reinstate Jay Peterson, who taught science at Prairie River Middle School and was working through a grievance process with the teachers union, the Merrill Teachers Association and its parent organization, the Wisconsin Education Association Council.
