Letter: Traffic must move more efficiently

I am a bit confused as to why the streets in this community (and many others in Wisconsin) are designed the way they are.

The "city planners" seem to want to, for whatever reason, inhibit the ability of traffic to move smoothly. Having lived in several large cities in the southeast and southwest, everywhere I have been, traffic is made to move efficiently. When a light turns green the lights following are synchronized to allow 20 or so cars to continue on light after light without stopping. The cars that are stopped will become the next leading bunch to move light to light without stopping. Here, it would seem, that for the most part lights are designed to stop you at every one. This is most irritating and a waste of fuel, and wear and tear on brakes, transmissions, etc.

While working regularly as a contractor at the Department of Transportation in Madison, I had a chance to talk to department employees who design roads in Wisconsin. They tell me that their department is 100 percent in favor of round-a-bouts and want to get rid of stop lights and four-way stops. Thankfully there is progress ahead.

I mean how dumb is it to come to a clearly visible four-way stop with no traffic or pedestrians in sight and still come to a stop. We are so conditioned that it doesn't even dawn on us what a waste of time and energy (fuel) this is.

And what is the deal with pedestrian right of way? Is it easier for a two mph person to stop and wait for a 2,000-pound vehicle doing 35 mph to go by or the other way around? The slower moving vehicle gets the right of way.

Quit trying to slow us down and let's get things done instead of moving along like we're all retired. And synchronize the lights so people can quit speeding to try to make the next one!
