Starving rabbits rescued from 'horrific' condition...: Oshkosh Humane Society rescued more than 30 starving rabbits found packed in cages and covered in excrement.

OSHKOSH - The Oshkosh Humane Society impounded more than 30 rabbits and an assortment of other small animals found at an undisclosed location in "deplorable" conditions.

The Humane Society responded to a police impound on March 16 and found the animals starving, packed tightly in cages and covered in excrement, executive director Joni Geiger said. Neither the Humane Society nor Oshkosh police disclosed where the rabbits were taken from.

Animal rescue workers found 35 rabbits, a guinea pig, two beta fish, a turtle and a gerbil, Geiger said. They found two dead rabbits and two nearly dead, she said.

Authorities are investigating the incident. The Oshkosh Police Department did not respond to a request for more information Friday.

Geiger said she couldn't discuss the incident other than describing the condition in which they found the animals.

"The urine and the waste was literally at least three inches deep. A lot of them had urine burns on their feet because they were forced to stand in their own waste," Geiger said. "Conditions were really horrific."

The Humane Society now owns the rabbits and needs help from people willing to donate food and hay or adopt a rabbit, she said. The shelter is equipped to care for only three or four rabbits, she said.

"We are asking that the community rally behind this and consider helping us," Geiger said. The shelter has never had an impound of this many rabbits, Geiger said.
