New products like flavored tobacco target youth.
EDITOR: I recently joined a group of other students to form Youth 4 Youth to help kids work through issues that affect us every day.
Kids like me are targeted every day. Advertising for everything from cereal to shoes to cellphones to movies is directed right at me and my classmates. One of the most irritating industries targeting me is tobacco companies. Quite honestly, what they are doing to get teens to try their new products makes me furious. Tobacco companies are using advertising, cool packaging, and candy flavors to try to addict me and my friends so we can spend the rest of our lives lining their pockets with money!
This week for Kick Butts Day on Wednesday, the Youth 4 Youth group made a "human billboard" as a way for me and other kids from my school to speak out and fight back against big tobacco companies that are playing with our lives and targeting us for a lifelong addiction to tobacco.
I think what tobacco companies are doing to get teens addicted to tobacco is wrong, and I am not alone. These new products, which are even cheaper than cigarettes, are hitting our store shelves and are in many of the magazines me and my friends read! I do not know if many of you have seen these new products, but we ask you to take a stand against what tobacco companies are doing and tell them to stop targeting kids!
