With the cold weather still here with us, I am reminded of years ago when I came home from school on baking day. Even before I opened the door, the aroma of Mama's baking wafted in the air. She would be baking bread or other baked goods. The aroma whetted us hungry kids' appetites even more.

Mama usually baked a robust rye bread. She hardly ever baked white bread. For making bread, she put warm water into a large bowl along with shortening, salt and a bit of sugar.
