QUEBEC - The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation opened its shipping season Friday with the transit of Canada Steamship Lines' Baie St. Paul through the St. Lambert Lock.

Baie St. Paul is a newly built ship.

The seaway said it expects tonnage transiting the system to exceed 40 million tons this year.

Shipping on the Great Lakes usually gets underway in earnest in late March and early April.
