Editor’s note: Today in “What’s the Story” we answer a question from a reader who wants to know what’s the story with the modified exhaust systems on motorcycles?

“They make a lot of noise and it appears that city police and county sheriff’s officers don’t enforce the ordinances that regulate the noise these machines make.”

A. “State law basically states you can’t operate any motor vehicle unless it’s equipped with an adequate muffler to prevent excessive or unusual noise,” said Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Olig. “So we look at whether you have a modified manufacturer’s exhaust pipe or if your muffler is extremely loud.”

Olig said state law applies to any vehicle with a motor, including motorcycles, mopeds and even bicycles with a motor.

If a muffler makes a louder noise than intended by the manufacturer, Olig said the vehicle is in violation of the law. Offenders will receive a 10- to 15-day notice to get the muffler fixed. If the offender does not bring the vehicle in for further inspection by the citing agency, the offender is subject to a $175 citation, Olig said.

“You do hear (loud mufflers) often, especially on the highway, but at higher rates of speed, it’s a little more difficult to spot sometimes,” Olig said. “We do what we can to uphold this law.”
