"A Nature Lover's Almanac: Kinky Bugs, Stealthy Critters, Prosperous Plants & Celestial Wonders,'' written by Diane Olson with illustrations by Adele Flail (Gibbs Smith)
This is a useful book to start a new gardening season, with its 12 chapters divided by month and each date offering up its own particular discovery. Maybe you'll learn how hard it is for the daddy longlegs to procreate (Oct. 26), or that when apple blossoms bud, it's a good time to plant arugula (April 10), or how to attract fireflies to your yard (June 2).
This isn't a children's book, but older kids, gardeners with a penchant for homespun wisdom rooted in truth, and anybody aspiring to increase their odds at qualifying for "Jeopardy!" - the daddy longlegs is not a spider, but "a phalangid, an order of insects that sports eight long, slender appendages," so there - might want to take a peek.
