Readers react: New laws won't solve problem

The gun owner is responsible to sell the gun to someone eligible to own it. He or she also is responsible for reporting a gun lost or stolen. But more and more laws won't solve the problem. Background checks will not stop straw purchases. Folks without criminal records will buy guns for criminals for various reasons and you cannot address them all.

- Melanie Clark

What problem do these background checks solve? Would any of the mass shootings have been prevented? There must be a very good reason to trample on the private property rights of citizens by requiring government permission to transfer ownership of a firearm, even giving or lending to a relative. Big Brother run amok.

- Jim Maas

Background checks will probably increase the number of black market sales and lead to a higher-stakes black market, meaning more violence (something like the result of the alcohol prohibition and the war on drugs). This regulation, though perhaps popular, will bring very limited benefits and, quite likely, more harm than good.

- William Meyer

I think we should have a law prohibiting criminals from possessing a firearm. Oh wait, we already have that. How's that working? Ya really think criminals are going to obey any more laws? Laws only affect the behavior of the law-abiding. There may be a problem with the current system of background checks. How about fixing that problem before expanding a system that doesn't work for a few to a system that doesn't work for everybody?

- Fred Yulga

With 81 percent favoring background checks and a huge percentage of gun transactions not being checked and straw purchases accounting for far too many people getting access to guns that are banned by law, we need better background checks!

- John Enk

Draft versions of Sunday editorials are posted online on Wednesday afternoon for feedback and reader reaction.
