March 25, 1959 - Two destroyers to visit: Two destroyers in the 28-ship task force of the U.S. Navy scheduled to visit Great Lakes ports this summer will make a four-day stop at Green Bay.
Plans for the task force visit were announced by Adm. Jerauld Wright, commander of the Atlantic fleet.
Destroyers scheduled to visit Green Bay July 11-14 are the Henley and the W. Kieth. A submarine, Corsair, is scheduled to tie up at Marinette-Menominee during the same period.
The visit of the ships to Great Lakes harbors was made possible by opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway locks. Until they were finished, ships longer than 400 feet with drafts greater than 14 feet could not enter the lakes from the Atlantic.
The Macon will visit Milwaukee but, the fact that it normally draws 26 feet of water will require that it anchor in the outer harbor there.
