Marc Hammer column: In defense of Gideon, public defenders

On the Opinion page of the March 19 Green Bay Press-Gazette, columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision in Gideon vs. Wainwright. The case holding stands for the proposition that a person charged with a crime who is too poor to hire a lawyer must be provided counsel in order to ensure a fair trial.
