No changes on Finley contract, gets $3 million bonus Tuesday

Mar. 25, 2013

Jermichael Finley said on Twitter Monday afternoon that he’ll remain with the Packers this season, and a source confirmed that the Packers tight end didn’t take a pay cut or have his contract changed in any way by the 3 p.m. deadline.

That means Finley will receive $3 million in roster bonus that's due Tuesday and $8.25 million this season, the last year of the two-year contract he signed in February 2012.

Finley's was a contract the Packers might have tired to address if they wanted to add to their $20.323 million in salary cap room. His bonus is due if he’s on the roster at the start of the league business day tomorrow morning, so the Packers would have had to cut him by 3 p.m. to avoid paying it.

However, after the Packers lost receiver Greg Jennings in free agency, the odds decreased substantially that they’d approach Finley for a pay cut.

Jennings was Packers one of their best offensive playmakers, and while Finley’s career has shown more potential than actual production in his five years in the NFL, he’s still one of their most talented offensive players and could help make up for the loss of Jennings. So Finley could have refused any overtures about a pay cut on the belief he’d have a decent market among the other 31 teams if the Packers had released him.
