The state Public Service Commission gave preliminary approval to Wisconsin Public Service Corp.'s pollution control plan for the Weston 3 coal-fired power plant near Wausau.

WPS plans to install Regenerative Activated Coke Technology (ReACT) at Weston 3 in an estimated $250 million project. ReACT would reduce sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions by 90 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by 20 percent, WPS said.

The installation would be the first commercial application of the ReACT technology in the United States.
