Question: I have a cargo rack that mounts on my trailer receiver. When the rack is loaded to capacity with my coolers and gear, it covers my license plate; is this legal?

Answer: In most cases, yes, this would be legal provided that the cargo rack or carrier is a temporary item and not permanently affixed to the rear of the vehicle. You could consider this type of rack similar to a utility or small snowmobile trailer that is not required to have a license plate but can temporarily block the view of your vehicle's rear license plate.

However, any type of permanently attached rack or carrier that would cover the license plate is not legal and you would have to move the license plate on your vehicle to ensure that it was visible.
