It's been more than a decade since the Gilbert paper mill closed its doors, and now city officials are hoping to transform the land into a riverfront trail.

The proposed trail would extend 1,000 to 1,200 feet along the riverfront of the former Gilbert paper mill site on Ahnaip Street. Plans include two handicapped accessible fishing areas and a 70-foot rock beach.

The preliminary cost estimate of the trail, $520,876, will likely rise once contractors are involved in the process, said Jeff Mazanec of R.A. Smith National, the company that designed the plans. ...
