Despite the snow on the ground, April in Portage County is springing to life with a multitude of arts and culture happenings as the Arts Alliance of Portage County celebrates April is Arts Month.
Throughout the month of April, Stevens Point Journal Media will feature an article each Thursday in the GO! section, not only highlighting special arts and culture events in the area, but also discussing the Creative Economy, Arts and Culture Tourism, Entertainment, and Teaching Artist-In-Residence programs.
In 2005, ArtsWeek in Portage County was created by the Arts Alliance of Portage County to market arts and culture events. In 2008, ArtsWeek in April was expanded and designated ArtsMonth by resolutions from both the Stevens Point City Council and the Portage County Board.
This month-long celebration of arts and culture includes: visiting international environmental artist Patrick Dougherty's lecture and installation at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the Stevens Point Sculpture Park; Festival of the Arts; Jazz and Poetry Night at the UWSP Learning Resources Center; Karen Savoca concert at the Jensen Community Center in Amherst; local gallery artist receptions at Gallery Q, Scarabocchio Art Museum and Carlsten Art Gallery in the Noel Fine Arts Center; The Water Coolers, a laugh-out-loud musical comedy, at Theater @1800; Boomin' Brewery Bash at Central Waters Brewing Co. in Amherst; recital concerts and dance performances at UWSP including Danstage and Soirée Musicale; Monteverdi Chorale concert "Song and Dance"; a theater production of "Guys and Dolls" in Amherst; a Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra concert; Murals Unmasked in downtown Stevens Point; the String and Voice Festival Concert at Ben Franklin Junior High School; and so many more events.
