Man's platelet donations 'a wonderful thing' (with video)

Retired Marshfield resident has given 19 gallons of tiny cells since 1997

At least once a month, Don Nystrom, 72, of Marshfield, gives about two hours of his time and almost two pints of his plasma and platelets to help other people.

"I'm retired. I have lots of time," Nystrom said as he grinned while celebrating his 151st visit Thursday to the city's BloodCenter of Wisconsin Inc. Since retirement in 1997, Nystrom has donated platelets about once a month - giving a total of nearly 19 gallons of the tiny cells.

A machine collected a portion of Nystrom's blood during his donation, transferred it to an integrated centrifuge that spun out the platelets and some of the ...
