When McKayla Schneck began a school project about the effects of recycling on the environment, she never thought she would be asked to join a local government task force to combat the issue.

McKayla, an eighth-grader at Idea Charter School in Weston, spent weeks researching how plastic bags pollute oceans and how this affects humans' food and jobs. When the project was finished, she wanted to help reduce the use of plastic bags in her hometown, but she wasn't sure how she could.
