Beat Notes: Weston to increase social media use

In an effort to better connect and communicate with residents, Weston leaders have started to amp up their presence on social media websites.

The village of Weston joined Facebook in summer 2009 and regularly updates it with village announcements, newsletters and links to business events, but Administrator Daniel Guild wants department heads to create their own professional pages.

"We need to develop a mindset in the organization for more communication and accountability - an expectation for officials to interact with public," Guild said.

Guild said social media is a more effective way to get news out to a large group of people without hours spent creating and sending out documents to individuals. The Facebook page has 1,101 likes, which equals the number of people it can communicate with in just one click.

Jen Higgins, Weston's community development director and zoning administrator, said she primarily runs the village's Facebook account, but she thinks individual accounts will be better for residents.

"We have more interaction with residents than we used to, and people are more free to ask questions and respond because it makes us more relatable and approachable," she said. "I think if the Public Works director can answer a question (on Facebook) about plowing, it's more credible. He's the expert."

Eventually, about 10 village leaders and department heads will have their own professional Weston Facebook accounts, but Guild said it will take time to educate his multi-generational workforce, as some older officials aren't familiar with the site.

? As temperatures continue to rise, local municipalities will begin planning community garage sales.

Kronenwetter will host its annual garage sale June 14, 15 and 16, and Weston will host its villagewide rummage sale May 3 and 4. So do a little spring cleaning and earn some extra cash for pieces of furniture or clothing items no longer needed. It's also a great opportunity for shopaholics to add to collections without breaking the bank.

To be included in either the Kronenwetter or Weston garage sale maps, visit www.kronenwetter.org or www.westonwisconsin.org, respectively.
