Southern Door School District seeks federal grant for fitness center upgrade

The Southern Door School District is seeking a U.S. Education Department grant for upgrading the high school gymnasium and weight room for uses as a community fitness center.

The Physical Education Program (PEP) grant could pay for "equipment, software and tools" said Marc Vandenhouten, fifth-grade teacher and co-leader - with physical education teacher Justin Tlachac - in the effort.

The grant would be for three years, with local in-kind contributions required: 10 percent in the first year, 40 percent in the second year and 70 percent in the final year, Vandenhouten said. ...
