FDL/NFDL FACT members join 'National Kick Butts Day' initiative

FACT "Fighting Against Corporate Tobacco" members from Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac joined thousands of kids across the country who took part in this year's 18th annual Kick Butts Day on March 20, which is a national day of activism that empowers youth to speak out, stand up and seize control against Big Tobacco.

As part of the Kick Butts Day initiative, Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac FACT members placed Kick Butts Day posters with important facts throughout their schools and announcements were read throughout the week including a different Big Tobacco Manipulation Lab SECRET being revealed each day.

? Stencils of Kick Butts Day and Big Tobacco's Manipulation Lab were seen by students, parents, and community members on windows in the FDL High School entrance.

Boys and Girls Club members participated in a scavenger hunt where each participant had to find three different candy cutouts that read: You've found a piece of grape-flavored acetone, citrus-flavored formaldehyde, and cherry-flavored cyanide. These toxic ingredients are found in tobacco and are masked by candy flavors in cigars and smokeless tobacco products.

Makala Nitkowski, FACT member at FDL High School, states "I enjoy being part of FACT because we don't tell youth what to do. We creatively inform youth on how tobacco companies manipulate us and just want our money. We want their decision to be an informed one. We fight against the tobacco industry. We are NOT against people who use tobacco because we recognize that it is an addiction."

"As the Adult Advisor for FACT in NFDL and FDL, I enjoy working with youth who are so passionate about standing up, speaking out, and seizing control against an industry that spends 133 million dollars every year in Wisconsin marketing their tobacco products. Tobacco prevention is so important because tobacco use is initiated and established primarily during adolescence, as more than 80% of adult tobacco users began using tobacco before 18 years of age," states Julie Jorgensen, Assistant Tobacco Control Program Coordinator for 5 Counties for Tobacco Free Living.

FACT members take part in a variety of activities in the community to inform their peers and community members about tobacco companies' deceptive practices including how tobacco companies manipulate youth by adding candy flavors to cigars and smokeless tobacco products. They have stenciled messages at Walleye Weekend, participated in the North Fondy Fest Parade, provided tobacco awareness games at Relay for Life, used cups-in-the-fence to spread their message, and they have educated local and state leaders on how tobacco companies target them to recruit replacement tobacco users.
