This has been a good winter for animals at the NEW Zoo, and not a bad one for birds at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.

"There are quite a few animals, like the African lions, who you wouldn't think would be happy with cold weather. They have no problem at all. On a sunny day, they just love the cold weather," said Carmen Murach, curator of animals at NEW Zoo.

Humans have taken to complaining about this year's "long" winter, at least in contrast to last year's very early spring. Zoo operations manager Andy Anderson said one day last week experienced a 105-degree swing in temperature, counting a 10-below ...
