Moving day is within sight for the Door County Humane Society.

Animals and staff are expected to move into their 6,700-square foot addition by the week of April 22.

After three years of planning, the $1.2 million expansion to the shelter on Door County PD, south of Sturgeon Bay, broke ground in November. The additional space will provide more room for the increased number of animals coming in from municipalities throughout Door County, said executive director Carrie Counihan. The shelter's animal intake increased 14 percent from 2011 to 2012, she said.

Two-thirds of the funds to cover the cost of the expansion have been raised, but the shelter is hoping to be "mortgage free'' by the time the animals move in. Naming opportunities are available in the new and renovated spaces, including the puppy nursery for $50,000, education library for $35,000, intake kennels for $5,000 each and name plaques for $1,000.

The second half of the construction, which is renovation of the 5,300-square foot current building, begins May 1. Improvements include a medical suite, isolation areas for the kennel and an updated cattery. It's expected to be completed in late July.

A grand opening for both projects is being planned for September.
