Why participate in Bike to School Day?

• Increase physical activity
• Teach safe bicycling and pedestrian skills to children
• Increase awareness of how bikeable and walkable a community is
• Demonstrate concern for the environment
• Reduce traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools
• Share time with community members, parents, and children

More

October saw 10,000 area students hitting the streets for International Walk to School Day, a worldwide effort to encourage fitness and activity, coordinated locally by healthy lifestyle advocacy group Live54218.

Now in May, the group hopes for the same numbers or more, but this time on two wheels.

May is National Bike Month, and May 6 is Bike to School Day. Live54218 encourages families to contact their schools and get involved with the event. And it’s fairly customizable: It can be as big or as small as needed, and Live54218 provides some incentives for participating schools, including a promotional toolkit.

To get the wheels turning at your school, contact Melinda Morella at Melinda@Live54218.org by Friday.
