A variety of short films will be shown in UW-Fond du Lac's Prairie Theater, 400 University Dr., at 6:30 pm, on Thursday, April 11 during the free Black Maria Film + Video Festival.
Black Maria is a national touring festival of independent, experimental and cutting-edge short films which will be shown on the large screen in the Prairie Theater. This is the third year that the film event has been held at UW-Fond du Lac.
"Viewers will be treated to films that might last two minutes or ten minutes; that might be narrative, documentary or animated short works; or that might be art films that are difficult to categorize," said John Short, UW-Fond du Lac Dean and CEO. "The Black Maria Film Festival will provide Fond du Lac with an extraordinary experience for our campus and community."
The Black Maria festival tours across the United States and abroad to approximately 65 universities, libraries, museums and other community organizations annually. UW-Fond du Lac is the only venue in Wisconsin on the 2013 tour.
Short adds that these are not traditional entertainment films. "We encourage everyone to come and experience films that you would normally have to drive to Milwaukee or Chicago to see. The different films are sure to spark emotions ranging from laughter to tears. The one sure thing is that they will capture your attention and your imagination."
John Columbus, founder and executive director of the Black Maria Film Festival, will introduce the films and will be available for comments and discussion. He has curated a selection of 14 short films to be shown at UW-Fond du Lac.
Black Maria Film Festival is named after the first motion picture studio designed and built by Thomas Edison in 1893 in West Orange, New Jersey. It was named for its resemblance to police paddy wagons of the era which were called Black Marias.
The film festival is sponsored by UW-Fond du Lac Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee (SUFAC) and Fine Arts and Lecture Committee. The films presented may not be suitable for all ages.
