Because extreme members of Congress refused to make common-sense choices to avert the sequester like closing tax loopholes on private jet owners, the rest of us are going to suffer at the airport when we are flying on our commercial planes. The sequester means deep cuts to the Department of Transportation and the FAA, as well as cuts to TSA and the Customs and Border Protection agencies. All of this is already translating to flight delays, long security lines, and multi-hour waits to clear Customs at major airports.
But it's not just an inconvenience we'll have to worry about; these reckless cuts will also threaten the safety of air travel nationwide. In order to meet its required budget cuts, the FAA will be closing over 100 control towers at small airports across the country, including eight here in Wisconsin. Though the airports will stay open, these closures will result in uncontrolled airport environments, where planes will take off and land without anyone guiding them.
Once again, Congress has let us down, sacrificing our time and safety to protect tax breaks for private jet owners, and it is disgraceful.
