Letter: Tighten those valves to save on water

Watch your water intake, Wausau

EDITOR: This may be of interest to people who pay water bills. Among my 90th birthday presents was a Wausau water and sewer bill for $144.13 for 2,400 cubic feet of water, which after deducting fixed charges of $41.41 left charges of $102.72 for water and sewer used.

After multiplying the cubic feet by 7,481 to get gallons and dividing by 90 days, I found that I was being charged for 200 gallons per day. Fifty gallons would be a lot of water for an old guy who doesn't cook, has water-saving toilets and doesn't linger in the shower.

So the friendly Water Works man took me to the meter and pointed to a 3/8-inch circle containing a spinning red triangular indicator and said that it should not be rotating when everything is shut off. Then we opened a toilet tank and found water overflowing into the drain. Instead of bending the rod connected to the float ball, he held a screwdriver vertically and turned an adjusting screw in the valve at the end a the rod, and adjusted the water level to an inch below the level of the drain.

He said that, when flushed, the tank should not completely empty because the remaining water would temper the incoming water. The red indicator was still rotating, so I shut off each toilet, which didn't help. Finally I used a pipe wrench to gently tighten a valve leading to an outside faucet and the red indicator stopped rotating.

Now I shall occasionally check the little red indicator, and I won't have to get a puppy to clean my dishes.

John W. Kelley,

Wausau
