One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for nonprofit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.
Leader Central: We are launching our online clothing store this coming summer in Mosinee. The C.F.A.C. Store (Clothing For A Cause) will be available to underprivileged individuals and families to either purchase clothes at or near yard sale prices or receive clothes for free, depending on the individual or families need. We will also ship the clothes to these individuals and families for FREE! All profits and donations for The C.F.A.C Store will be used to keep the store running and to cover shipping costs. We need volunteers to help with our clothing inventory and building the storage for it. We need people to help us separate, fold, scan, photograph and upload clothing onto our online clothing store. We are also looking for volunteers with carpentry skills. We prefer volunteers with carpentry experience, but if you know how to use a power drill, circular saw and know how to hammer a nail, then we can use you.
The Family Center: Are you interested in volunteering for the Family Center but just need a little more information? Continue reading to answer any questions you might have about volunteering for this worthy cause. The Family Center is an emergency shelter and offers supportive services for victims of domestic violence and their families. The goal is to assist them in developing a lifestyle that is violence free and healthy. The Family Center offers several volunteer opportunities. Some involve contact with the clients but many do not. For example, they always are looking for volunteers to help sort donations of food, clothing and toys; and they are looking for a volunteer to clean the staff offices once a week. They have one opportunity where volunteers do not even come to the shelter: they are looking for volunteers to provide a safe home for the pets of the families who stay there. Right now, they particularly need a volunteer to be a front office assistant. All volunteers are interviewed prior to starting, to answer any questions and tours are available as well. Everybody deserves a safe place to live. The Family Center fills that need in our community. If you are interested in helping out, please know that whatever you decide to do - regardless if it's being a shelter assistant or licking stamps - you are making a difference and your help is greatly appreciated.
Safe Routes to School (wisconsin Rapids Police Department): 18 volunteers are needed to participate in a "Walking School Bus" to Mead Elementary School. Volunteers escort groups of children to school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The program starts April 9 and lasts until the end of the school year (possibly continuing for summer school) and starting back up during the 2013-14 school year (until winter). Mead Elementary School is the first location selected for this program with hopes of extending it to other schools in the district. There are three routes and two volunteers are needed per route per day. Volunteers can select the days they participate or take all three days. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. (mornings only). Volunteers must agree to a background check, need to be able to walk up to one mile and be available for a one- to two-hour training session.
? The Volunteer Center is looking for nominees to be honored at the 2013 Volunteer Recognition Breakfast. Deadline is April 9. The Volunteer Recognition Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. April 23 at Hotel Mead. For more information, go to www.uwiw.org.
