Letter: Guns not to blame for violent rampages

9:01 PM, Apr. 4, 2013  |  Comments

Many would say that guns are the reason for so many of today's violent rampages. Boiled down to its final essence, the reason for today's mass carnage is not the guns, but the violent or deranged person behind the gun.

In other parts of the world, similarly inclined persons use vests or car bombs, knives or swords, and yes even guns. So it is not the inert objects which should be our concern, but the deranged or violent person who grabs hold of his or her preferred most lethal weapon.

Sit down for a few quiet moments and try thinking this through. Dwell on the consensus of opinion which evolved within days after the Columbine mass shooting. I know because I was on the Columbine scene just a day or two later. I took pictures of the hastily drawn memorials in the park adjacent to the school. Their collective essence was: GUNS DO NOT KILL PEOPLE; people behind guns kill people.

Thus the prime question becomes: how do we curb or lessen VIOLENCE in our society? Do we ban or boycott the violent overkill in our movies or on TV? Do we ban or boycott violent video games? And/ or do we sound the death knell for gladiator-type sports?

I do not have the final answers. That is why I am reaching out to you, the public. If nothing else, perhaps it will begin a civil discourse or debate on this most important topic. Is there too much violence engrained in our society? If so, how do we lessen or ameliorate its impact?

What say you?
