American Transmission Co. said Friday helicopter crews are patrolling electric transmission lines to look for damage, right-of-way and vegetation encroachments.

Chemair Helicopters of Jefferson was hired for the work. Crews will fly about 10 feet above power lines and will avoid flying over livestock where possible, the company said.

Inspections are taking place in the Appleton and Green Bay areas now. Inspections will take place across the state throughout the month.

ATC manages 9,440 miles of transmission lines in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
