MADISON (AP) The University of Wisconsin System's Board of Regents has confirmed Rebecca Blank as the next chancellor of UW-Madison.

Blank will be paid $495,000 a year.

Blank was the acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and she holds a doctorate degree in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Republican state Rep. Steve Nass, chairman of the Assembly Colleges and Universities Committee, opposes her selection. He says her credentials are impressive but he's worried her policies will lead to unaffordable tuition increases.

The board on Friday has also confirmed James Schmidt to lead UW-Eau Claire. He was the vice president for university advancement at Winona State University in Minnesota.

He will be paid $220,000 a year.
