Archery program aimed at youths

More than 1,000 boys and girls gathered at East Junior High School on Friday in Wisconsin Rapids for the first day of the National Archery in the Schools Program's eighth annual championship competition.

The students, in fourth through 12th grades, represented more than 50 schools in Wisconsin, said Renee Arndt of Ontario, Wis., a volunteer who worked the registration table Friday. Three years ago, just more than 600 students from 18 schools participated in the tournament.
