Weekend Gardener: Spring is slow to show

Last year by this time, the rhododendrons were in bloom, the crocus had been nipped off by the rabbits and the pussy willow buds had burst into yellow confetti.

I had already checked cutting back the perennial beds and pruning the roses off my to-do list.
