Young adults meandered from class to class, sometimes stopping at their lockers to pick up a book. The school's superintendent talked about the basketball team's upsetting February loss in the state tournament, and students in the library typed up papers on computers.

It seemed like a typical day for a high school, except that this one is surrounded by oversized, chain-link fences topped with barbed wire, and it's filled with students who cannot go home after classes.
