52 years ago: A look at how Wisconsin voted in spring elections

Each Monday, we turn to a day in the newspaper's history for a look at what the Editorial Board found worthy of comment. We will preserve the punctuation and capitalization of the original editorial column. Here is what we wrote on April 8, 1961:

Looking back ...

Looking back at Tuesday's election after a few days of cogitation, the principal impression is that Wisconsin voters did an extremely poor job of turning out to vote, but those who voted performed a good job on candidates and issues.

Statewide, only 33 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in the school superintendent race and even less than that in the contest to choose a new member of the State Supreme Court.

The Record-Herald felt that Angus Rothwell, a former local educator, deserved the school post because of his excellent background. State voters gave him about a 75,000 vote edge over his opponent. The selection of Judge Myron L. Gordon of Milwaukee to the top state court will add luster to the court in that it will again have a justice with trial judge experience, something the court had for more than a century prior to 1958 but has not had since then. This is not to indicate that Atty. Stewart Honeck was not deserving of the post. (...)

It was somewhat disappointing that voters did not agree to extend the tenure of sheriffs beyond a possible two terms. The Record-Herald favored this because it would represent a step in the right direction. Actually, we believe it is time to select career men as the chief law enforcement officers of the county.

After all, the sheriff is responsible for law enforcement in the county and in Marathon County - the state's biggest - it is a big job. Why should we choose our county law man on the basis of partisan politics? It is ridiculous in this day and age of scientific law enforcement and detection. Extending the sheriff's possible tenure beyond two terms would have helped this situation, although it is not the final and full answer.

But, all in all, the election results were good.
