CSA connection enriches study abroad experience

Taylor Putz, a Marian University student, participated in an international education experience from August-December 2012 in Latin America. While there, he conducted research regarding the right to health care in Nicaragua. With the help of Sister Mirna Alvarado, CSA, he was able to connect with health care workers, patients and government officials whom he interviewed for his project. Sister Mirna has ministered in Waspam since 1990, caring for the people in Waspam and in many rural communities along the Río Coco.

Along the muddy banks of the mighty Río Coco (River Coco) in Waspam, Nicaragua, in small rural communities with no electricity or running water, they wait in the welcome shade of the cocoa trees surrounding the medical clinic. Some arose before dawn to walk for hours to a neighboring barrio. Many bring small children. For most, this will be their only opportunity to receive medical care for months.
