Run-off from large farms polluting our water

Living in Kewaunee County, we have 16 large industrial farms that spread millions and millions of gallons of waste on the landscape here, including in the late fall and early winter - with no cover crops. It is no real surprise that a large amount of sediment, soil and manure run off creating a great deal of pollution, especially to our local lakes, streams, and tributaries. There needs to be a wake-up call for people to realize that if you are spreading that volume of waste, you are going to have major problems, including the contamination of aquifers, groundwater and wells.

It's time for people to start engaging in their rights to clean drinking water and protecting our beautiful Wisconsin waterways and Lake Michigan. Watch our tourism die as beaches are clogged with cladophora algae, which stinks, and closed due to E. coli warnings. Many of our water woes are directly linked to our farming practices, or lack thereof.

Despite the increased use of nutrient management plans we have not seen an improvement in our waterways or our groundwater but instead have seen continued degradation. Nutrient management plans and best management practices are not protecting our precious water resources.
